Six insurance policies you should avoid buying

Every asset has an economic value, but after its life-time, the asset needs to be replaced with a substitute. However, there can be an unfortunate event like an accident which may destroy the asset (including human) early or make it incapable of generating any income. For reducing the financial effect of such adverse situations, insurance comes into the picture. So, the simple rule is: all those things, which will cause you economic loss to replace or reinstate, should be insured.

"But practically it's not possible because if you try to insure everything under the sun, you will be left with no money for your living expenses & financial goals. One should, therefore, consider two things before taking any insurance - the probability of an event & its financial impact on your life," says Hemant Beniwal,
a Sebi-registered investment adviser.

It can be simply understood by this grid:

A: High Probability, High Financial Impact - type should be covered without any second thought - e.g. health insurance & motor insurance.

B: Low Probability, High Financial Impact - type can have a significant financial impact. So should be considered after looking at personal situations & assets; e.g. term insurance, accidental insurance & critical care insurance.

C: High Probability, Low Financial Impact - In this case risk should be retained or transferred to insurance companies; e.g. extended warranties.

D: Low Probability, Low Financial Impact - Such insurance can be outrightly ignored, like credit card insurance.

Sometimes the probability of an event may depend on your job profile or individual situation. Take the case of IT professionals, for instance. They sit in front of their computers or laptops for most part of the day. The prolonged sitting leads to problems such as back pain. This means they have a greater risk of physical health problems and so they will be more concerned about them. Now consider a manufacturing company. The probability of an accident taking place there is high. So, accidental insurance may be essential for the people working there.

Still there are some insurance policies which people don't need in normal circumstances. Here we take a look at some of them:

Insurance for Investment Purpose: Insurance is an investment is a myth which companies or agents have played around with to maximize their earnings. Since we are used to looking at receiving a return on every penny we spend in our lifetime, agents or companies push expensive products with return maximization strategies. This leads us to buy the wrong product every time.

Therefore, "you should never mix insurance and investments. This is also applicable on investment products which offer insurance benefits. Like some mutual funds offer the benefit of health & life insurance, if you invest in their schemes. These offers should be ignored as they always come with some hidden T&C of exit loads & expenses. Also, ignore health insurance policies which have investment components and go for plain vanilla health insurance products instead," explains Beniwal.

Life Insurance for Children:
All parents want to ensure their child's future. And to do this, some want to buy a child policy which can meet their child's financial requirements. But buying a policy on child's name is not the right solution as the objective of insurance is to support your dependents financially when you are no more. Hence, the insurance has to be in your name rather than that of your child.

Also, "child plans -- be it ULIPs or traditional ones -- are highly costly and can fall short of inflation-adjusted corpus at the time of need for education or marriage. Even coverage may fall short of requirement, taking into consideration the high cost of primary education, leave aside higher education," says Subhabrata Ghosh, Certified Financial Planner and Member of The Financial Planners' Guild India.

Excess Accidental Insurance: Accidental insurance is a must have insurance, but in India there are some limitations in the product. The biggest flaw is that in most of the cases accidental death is the base policy, which is already covered in the term insurance. So if someone already has sufficient life cover through a term plan, this insurance is not required. A lot of people also opt for accidental death benefit rider in case of traditional insurance policies. They should check their total life coverage before taking any decision. In international markets, dismemberment policy can be bought with accidental death benefit, which is not the case in India.

Wedding Insurance & Flight Insurance: Both of these fall under the low probability but high impact category. Flight insurance can be clearly ignored as that will be covered under life insurance. Wedding insurance is a new category in general insurance, which covers loss due to wedding cancellation, damage of property, personal accident & public liability.

"Accidental & property damage is already covered under any comprehensive accidental insurance and householder insurance policy. So a separate cover is usually not needed for it. It's wedding cancellation & public liability, however, which can have a significant financial impact. But in India people are more accommodating in case of cancellation of an event in comparison to the western world. Add to it the list of exclusion in such policies, and wedding insurance is still not in a priority list," informs Beniwal.

Credit Card Insurance: How many times you lost your credit card? Even if once, what's the first thing that you did? In fact, you asked to block your card and the card company issued a new card. So rather than taking insurance for loss of credit card, make sure it's not lost or rather keep lesser-limit cards in your wallet.

There is another issue too. Whenever you get your credit card from a bank or financial institution, they usually start pitching a lot of insurance policies which are marketed as 'especially available for our card holders' - health insurance and accidental insurance are the most common. In most of the cases, either these policies are expensive or come with a lot of limitations. Moreover, insurance in these policies may not be transferred if you don't want to continue with your card company. So, why to get stuck with such policies?

Clearly mention conditions, benefits of insurance products: IRDA

To help consumers guard against bogus claims being made by insurers, sector regulator IRDA has said the companies will have to clearly define conditions along with benefits and riders of products to customers.
Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), in its revised draft regulations on consumer protection, has also said that insurance companies must place all the product information in public domain. The regulator has also sought comments from the public and all stakeholders on the draft regulations on or before January 19, 2015.
“A prospectus of any insurance product shall clearly state the scope of benefits, the extent of insurance cover and in an explicit manner explain the warranties, exceptions and conditions of the insurance cover.
“Every insurer shall place in public domain complete details of product particulars of each and every product that was offered for sale by the insurer as it was filed and approved by IRDA,” said the draft regulations.
In case of life insurance products, they should clearly mention if it comes with profit or without profits and the riders on products shall be clearly spelt out with regard to scope of benefits, as per the draft norms.
Among others, it said the insurers should formulate an insurance awareness policy to educate customers, constitute a policyholder protection committee ensuring its proper functioning as well as formulate a grievance redressal policy for speedy resolution of grievances.
The draft has also suggested comprehensive, dispassionate and true information about products by the companies.
“The insurers shall ensure that the benefit/returns of the policy are not mis-stated/mis-represented or the prospect is not forced to buy a policy.
“Insurers shall disclose restrictions/conditions of all aspects of benefits that are material,” it added.
The draft norms further said that the products should suit policyholders with respect to income, personal and family circumstances, life stage, financial goals and risk appetite as the customer has the right to service of the proper kind.
It said that name and address of agent/insurance intermediary should also be mentioned in the policy document and premium receipts or any such communication.
The insurers, agents and intermediaries shall strictly adhere to IRDA advertisement regulations and shall not issue any misleading or unfair advertisement,” it added.
“Violations of any provisions of Advertisement Regulations and guidelines...shall be dealt with as per provisions of the relevant regulations/provisions of the Act,” it added.
IRDA said the revised regulations may be known as IRDA (Protection of Policyholder’s Interests) Regulations 2014 as and when they come to force.

Cabinet clears ordinances on reforms in insurance, coal sectors

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved ordinances to push reforms in the coal and insurance sectors after it was unable to pass bills for these in the winter session of Parliament that ended on Tuesday.
The Bills could not be taken up in the Rajya Sabha as a united opposition held up proceedings for much of the month-long session. The government is in a minority in the Rajya Sabha.
The Insurance Laws Amendment Bill, 2008 could not be taken up for discussion despite being approved by the Select Committee of the Upper House. The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill, 2014 has already been approved by the Lok Sabha during the session, but that too could make no progress in the other House, as the opposition stalled the Rajya Sabha over religious conversions and other issues.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had on Saturday said, "the government is extremely determined to go ahead with this (insurance sector) reforms and will not allow a Parliamentary disturbance to obstruct or delay a reform of this kind."
On the Coal Bill, Mr Jaitley had said, "it is a bill which has been unanimously passed by the Lok Sabha. All doubts have been cleared. It was not allowed to come on the agenda of the Upper House."
The Insurance Bill, which has been pending since 2008 in the Rajya Sabha, seeks to increase the composite foreign investment limit in insurance companies to 49 per cent from current level of 26 per cent. The 49 per cent cap would include both FDI and foreign portfolio investments.
The passage of Coal Bill is essential as it would pave way for auctioning of coal mines which were cancelled by the Supreme Court.

Logjam in RS may force Govt to go for Ordinance on Insurance FDI

With just two sittings remaining in the winter session of Parliament and the logjam in the Rajya Sabha continuing, the Government might take Ordinance route for increasing FDI limit in the capital starved insurance sector.

The Bill has been cleared by the Cabinet and a select committee report on the Insurance Bill tabled in the Upper House but an aggressive opposition is making things difficult for the government and now passing of the Bill this session looks impossible.

However, according to sources, the government is keen to give reforms a push to boost the investor sentiment. It, therefore, might not wait for the next session to pass the Insurance Bill, and rather promulgate an ordinance.

Hospitalization claims for fever high, insurers encouraging return to GPs

While heart diseases are India's biggest killers, the country's health insurance map shows that the largest number of claims is made for hospitalization due to commonplace fever and infections. 

The other three diseases that got the maximum claims include eye-related problems (excluding cataract), heart ailments and gastrointestinal complications. 

"In 2014, we had the maximum number of claims for fever followed by respiratory diseases,'' confirmed Amit Bhandari of ICICI Lombard, the country's largest private insurance company. 

Experts said inflation in the medical arena has dropped, which could mean little rise in insurance premium. A senior official of a private insurance company said while premiums had risen between 15%and 20% in the last two years, it's likely to increase by barely 2% in the coming year. 

The biggest development in insurance-paid healthcare is the emergence of private primary healthcare providers. The term stands for the now corporatized option for general physicians. 

Metropolitan cities such as Mumbai have in the last decade witnessed a sharp drop in the number of general physicians as many doctors prefer to super-specialize. Moreover, use of tertiary (super specialty) hospitals is up among patients. ICICI data shows such use increased from 43% to 49% among its customers from 2013 to 2014. 

"This leads to overcrowding of super specialty hospitals by patients who could easily have been managed in smaller centres,'' said Bhandari. 

In response, companies such as Nationwide in Bangalore and HealthSpring in Mumbai have come up to provide an alternative to the disappearing general physicians. Insurers are now offering the option of cover for out-patient department consultations. "The idea is to get patients to visit a general doctor instead of a specialist at the beginning. Why should, for instance, a super specialty hospital look after a malaria patient who can be managed on an out-patient basis?" said Bhandari.

Govt to roll out National Health Assurance Mission

The government is likely to roll out its much touted National Health Assurance Mission (NHAM) in January, promising health insurance for all. The PMO asked the health ministry to work out the modalities of the scheme as well as revamp the existing Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) to expand its span to include universal coverage, Times Of India reported quoting an official. 

RSBY, currently managed by the labour ministry, will also be soon transferred to the health ministry. "A decision to this effect has already been taken by the PMO," the official, who attended the meeting, told TOI. He said the PMO wants the ministry to expedite the streamlining of the scheme. 

For the time being, RSBY will be part of NHAM which will be rolled out in phases. Gradually, the two will be merged as one policy, the official said. "The complete merger will take around three years," he said.
Improving public health has been high on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda. Sources said the Cabinet secretariat and PMO have been regularly taking updates on the issue.

The government plans to offer a complete basket of services under NHAM. This would include 50 essential medicines, a package of diagnostic services as well as around 30 alternative medicines such as ayurveda, homeopathy etc. The benefits will be available to all citizens unlike RSBY which is mostly limited to below-poverty-line families.

Maharashtra tops in motor insurance share

Maharashtra has the highest share -- over 16 per cent -- in the motor insurance premium (own damage category) of about Rs 17,098 crore collected as of 2012-13 in the country, whereas Gujarat tops in terms of annual growth rate, an Assocham study said. 

Maharashtra has the highest share of over 16 per cent in total motor insurance premium (own damage) worth about Rs 17,098 crore collected as of 2012-13. 

"However, Gujarat has ranked top clocking compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 123 per cent in terms of gross direct premium in motor insurance (own damage category) collected by the states during 2009-10 and 2012-13," according to the study. 

The motor insurance premium collection more than doubled in Gujarat in three years, going up to around Rs 1,379 crore in 2012-13 from around Rs 618 crore in 2009-10. Tamil Nadu has the second highest share -- over 8 per cent -- in premium collected, followed by Gujarat (8 per cent), Karnataka (7.7 per cent) and Uttar Pradesh (6.9 per cent). 

With a CAGR of about 104 per cent, Bihar is ranked second in growth, followed by Madhya Pradesh (98 per cent), Maharashtra (96 per cent) and Himachal Pradesh (94 per cent). 

The gross direct motor insurance (own damage) premium collection increased at a CAGR of about 83 per cent, from Rs 9,345 crore in 2009-10 to about Rs 17,098 crore as of 2012-13.

Rajinikanth's Lingaa gets mega-insurance cover of over Rs 200 cr

Superstar Rajinikanth’s film Lingaa, which will release in theatres on December 12, has secured a mega-insurancecover, including production insurance and loss of revenue in India and overseas.

Industry estimates suggest the size of the cover could be well above Rs 200 crore. This includes upwards of Rs 100 crore for production cover apart from cover against force majeure incidents that could disrupt the screening of the film.

Sumant Salian, head of media and entertainment, Alliance Insurance Brokers, said: “Rajini sir’s Lingaa has a higher production insurance cover than other films of south India. The film was also wrapped up in record time. They have covered loss of revenue overseas, since his films are very popular abroad.”

Insurance companies compensate film production houses for delays and losses due to adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, damage to property and injury to actors during shooting. Sudden illness among the main cast of the film due to food poisoning is also covered by such policies.

A decade ago the film insurance segment was dominated by public-sector general insurers but now private insurers have entered the scene. Film insurance, was once considered an additional burden for film producers, has become the norm.

The share of film insurance in the overall insurance business could touch 8-10 per cent in the next three-five years, say experts. At present, it accounts for about two per cent of the industry’s total business.

Apart from Bollywood movies, several south Indian movies are heavily insured. Claim payments have also been on the rise with recent cases of fire on sets and actors falling ill during shooting.

As a concept, film insurance came into existence in the early 1990s. Taal was one of the first movies to be insured. Sanjay Dutt’s arrest during the making of Khalnayak prompted Subhash Ghai to insure his next movie Taal, for which he paid Rs 15 lakh as premium for a film valued at about Rs 11 crore.

Since then more and more producers have been insuring their movies. These policies cover loss to life or property on film sets. They also cover legal issues related to a film as well as post-release risks like theatre shutdown due to riots or strikes.

Acts of terrorism, perilous activities, disappearance, unexplained inventory shortage, war or invasion are excluded from the cover. Some policies also cover the advance paid to film stars.

A senior executive looking into miscellaneous lines of business in a public-sector general insurance company said the stakes were high in a Rajinikanth film because a megastar was involved. "With his films doing good business in South East Asia, the US and UK, it was imperative to take an overseas insurance cover as well,” he added.

In film insurance policies, the type of cover depends on the budget of the film. The premium for such a policy is usually 0.3-0.8 per cent of a film’s budget. If the budget of a film is Rs 100 crore, for instance, the premium would be Rs 30-80 lakh. While submitting a request for insurance, the production house should provide details of the budget, including money paid to the actors, the shooting schedule and location.

Foreign firms line up for Indian insurance broking

Despite a challenging business environment in the insurance broking industry, a lot of foreign brokerages are planning to enter the Indian market in the coming months.

On Wednesday, JLT, one of the world’s largest providers of insurance and reinsurance brokerage and associated services announced its entry into the Indian insurance broking business through a joint venture with the Sunidhi Group.

“India is a market, which no foreign players can ignore at the moment. There are many foreign broking firms that are planning to tap the Indian market. Our goal is to become one of the top five brokers in the country in another five years,” said Sanjay Radhakrishnan, chief executive officer of JLT Independent Insurance, which is holding a 26 per cent stake in the joint venture.

Currently, there are 343 registered insurance brokers in India. Out of these, five or six entities are joint ventures between a foreign broker and a domestic partner. According to the current regulation, a foreign partner is not allowed to hold more than 26 per cent stake in the insurance broking firm. Mr Radhakrishnan said that his firm is willing to increase its stake in the joint venture as and when the domestic regulation permits foreign investors to hold a higher stake.

While there is a proposal to allow 100 per cent FDI in insurance broking firm, Sohanlal Kadel, president of Insurance Brokers Association of India, said that his association would oppose any such move from the government.

The proposal, he said, would hit local players hard. “We are open to foreign players holding either 26 per cent or 49 per cent stake with management control with Indian. However, we will oppose any move to allow 100 per cent FDI in insurance broking industry,” Mr Kadel said.

Check premium

Use the simple principle of paying for what you get. Your premium should be commensurate to the features and services of your policy and the quantum of coverage (i.e. sum insured). Compare similar products across insurers to understand appropriate premium for your chosen product.

Review benefits & features

Go through the product offerings in detail to understand benefits and innovative features being offered by specialised health insurance companies. Automatic policy recharge, annual health check-up, daily hospitalisation allowance, treatment abroad cover and second opinion are some of the valuable benefits that make the offering highly attractive and prudent.

Look for cashless facility

This is a key aspect of a health insurance policy because if your insurer has a direct tie-up with a hospital, you can opt for the cashless treatment facility. In other words, you will not have to fork out any money and the claim will be directly settled by your insurance company, saving you from the hassle of filing for reimbursement. Ideally, opt for an insurance company that offers cashless facility at well-equipped hospitals — especially within your geographical proximity.

Go through exclusions

Before you commit yourself to buying a health insurance policy, go through the fine print, raise questions and do not simply go by what you were told or promised verbally. The “exclusions” notification or section of any health insurance policy is important because it informs you about ailments and treatments that the policy doesn't cover. Be proactive on this front - else you might be in for an unwanted surprise when you file your claim.

No-claim bonus

Co-payment clause

The co-payment means that the policyholder will have to share a part of his/her medical bill with the insurance company. For example, if the co-payment clause says 20%, it means that for every Rs 100 of a claim, the insurance company will pay Rs 80 while the remaining Rs 20 would be borne by the insured. This clause could be a part of the policy’s  terms and conditions or could come into force for certain age-groups or sum insured levels. Hence, you should look for health insurance plans that offer a favorable co-payment clause throughout the policy life cycle.

Free-look period

Health insurance policies usually come with a 15-day free-look period. It offers you the convenience of returning your policy, if you find it unsuitable, within 15-days of receiving the policy document. Premium for the same is refunded after pro-rata deductions. However, you will only be in a position to take this decision after you have studied all aspects of your policy document in detail - it would be wise to do so at the earliest.

Track the record

Choose a product that offers a combination of most of the above mentioned features. The quality of your insurer’s service delivery and customer-oriented approach will always remain critical decisive factors while choosing your health insurance policy.

Nationwide air ambulance project set to take off

India will soon have a nationwide air ambulance service which could turn out to be affordable for common people with a monthly salary of Rs 15,000 or an insurance cover.

Helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS), which is common in developed countries, is expected to kick off in India in the last quarter of 2015, with three companies — Aviators Air Rescue Pvt Ltd, an Indian operator, Air Medical Group Holdings Inc, an air medical provider in the US and Airbus Helicopters — signing a tripartitie agreement.

To start with, the proposed HEMS will begin operations from South India, using three Airbus Helicopters-built EC135 T3/P3 helicopters operated by Aviators. “More such helicopters are expected to be phased in during 2016 for expanded nationwide coverage. We expect to cover the entire country within three years as we are adding at least even helicopters per year,” said Arun Sharma, managing director of Aviators Air Rescue.

“This service will be affordable to a person drawing a monthly salary of Rs 15,000-20,000. It’s very affordable and we are putting our final touches to the numbers,” Sharma told The Indian Express. “Each helicopter will be operated by two pilots and two medical crew. This service will be available nationwide with at least one helicopter covering the state,” he said.

Sharma said the company is in discussions with insurance companies to make it affordable to common people. “There will be a premium to avail such a service. The service is affordable without insurance in its current offering,” Sharma said.

He said in this first phase, there will be seven helicopters with a total investment of approximately $60 million. “We will tie up with hospitals and discussions are in the final stages,” he said.

What can really make the HEMS popular and affordable will be the availability of insurance coverage for using such facilities. “One simple possibility is to give such emergency cover add-on cover to health and PA policies. The add-on cover is possible with life insurance policies. Yes, there will be extra premium for the add-on cover but it may not be significant,” said former IRDA Member (life) KK Srinivasan.

The project has selected EC135 T3/P3 helicopter made by Airbus. “With the support of Airbus Helicopters and Air Medical Group Holdings which are leaders in their respective fields, Aviators will provide top-notch air medical services,” Sharma said.

Jan Dhan: Inclusion scheme excludes most

Restricts scope of life insurance cover to bring down burden on the exchequer


The government has started applying exclusion principles to its inclusion scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). The life cover of Rs 30,000 announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for all those opening a bank account under the scheme will now exclude many.

The finance ministry has put several riders for defining one's eligibility for a life insurance policy under PMJDY. In the guidelines issued to banks last week, the ministry said the insurance would be provided only to one person in a family for accounts opened between August 15, 2014, and January 26, 2015.

Those filing income tax returns, serving and retired central and state government employees, employees of central and state public sector entities, and people already covered under the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojna have been excluded. The families of the individuals in all these categories will also be ineligible for it.

"The scheme aims to provide security to those families who cannot afford life insurance, namely the urban poor and the rural poor, who are not covered under any social security scheme," the finance ministry said, in the guidelines reviewed by Business Standard.

The life cover will initially be only for five years and provided to the head of the family or an earning member in the age group of 15-59 years. The person will be excluded from the life insurance scheme after turning 60. So, someone who opted for it at the age of 59 will be covered only for one year.

The account holder should also have an active RuPay debit card (used at least once in 45 days) and a biometric card linked to the account to get the benefit of the life cover.

"Those who already have a life cover from some other scheme will have to choose between the existing one and the one under PMJDY," said a finance ministry official, asking not to be named.

Since accident insurance of Rs 1 lakh, along with a RuPay debit card, was available even before the launch of the scheme and would be effective only up to March 31, 2015 (its extension will be reviewed later), life insurance and credit facility were the two main attractions of PMJDY. Absence of a life cover might make the scheme unattractive to many and hurt the financial inclusion drive.

Launching the scheme on August 28, the prime minister had set a target of taking banking to 75 million households by January 26, 2015. Although 78 million accounts have already been opened, 20 per cent of households are still unbanked. Many people who already had an account opened another one. Only 47 million of these account holders have a RuPay card and 59 million accounts have zero balance.

"Now, only the families which are truly eligible for the scheme will get the benefit," said a member of the State Level Bankers Committee, looking at the rollout of the scheme in a western state.

Restricting the scope of the scheme will reduce the burden on the exchequer. Life Insurance Corporation of India will create a fund for life coverage with an initial corpus of Rs 100 crore from the Social Security Fund of the Centre. It will be replenished by the government from time to time within the stipulated premium amount to meet the outgo and administrative expenses.

Earlier, the government had said the accidental insurance cover and life cover will be available to all account holders. Problems have started surfacing on the accidental insurance front, too. Although the insurance programme had come into effect from April 1, 2014, claims have shot up after the launch of PMJDY and the issue has been raised with the finance ministry as the insurers did not anticipate such high claims.

"People who got the RuPay card as part of PMJDY have started filing accident insurance claims. We are awaiting more clarity from the finance ministry," said the person mentioned above. The RuPay card is being given free of cost to the customer and the National Payments Corporation of India pays the premium of Rs 0.47 per card to HDFC Ergo. It can be given to any account holder and every member of a family. A person who is already having a bank account with any bank just needs to get issued a RuPay card in his existing account to get the benefit of insurance.

Centre urged not to increase FDI cap in insurance sector

Members of General Insurance Employees Association, Bengaluru Region, have opposed the Union government’s proposed decision to increase the FDI cap in the insurance sector and disinvest the profit making insurance public sector undertakings.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Association General Secretary B.A. Premkumar said, “The proposal to disinvest the shares of the public sector general insurance companies will be against the nation’s interest. The four public sector general insurance companies, United Indian Insurance, National Insurance, New Indian Assurance, Oriental Insurance and Re Insurance PSU, are wholly owned by the Government of India and are making profit. These five PSUs have together posted a gross profit of Rs. 5,899 crore during the year 2013-14.”

“Increase in FDI limit in insurance will not only lead to giving the foreign capital more space and access to the savings of Indians, but would also affect the nation’s economy”, Mr. Premkumar added.

If the Union government pushes the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, insurance employees will go on a day’s strike, the very next day of the passing of the Bill, he said.

How increasing FDI cap will benefit the insurance sector

With the new government’s stress on reforms, steps taken by IRDA to make insurance more consumer-friendly and India’s favourable demographic, the future of India’s insurance industry looks good

India being viewed as a land of contradictions is a fairly common refrain. From bustling metropolises to lightless villages, there is a huge variance in different aspects of life.  Nowhere is this variance as amply clear as it is in the insurance sector in India. Consider this, with 52 insurance companies, India’s insurance sector is one of the largest in the world in terms of volumes of money involved. And yet, insurance is yet not as pervasive in India as it should be, as only about 25 percent of the people have general insurance cover. This dichotomy of market-size and market cover is the biggest lacunae in the sector, a lacunae that the government hopes to fill through privatization.

Yet, the road to FDI is fraught with many roadblocks. Successive governments have failed in opening up the sector, despite numerous attempts, leading to lot of confusion and conundrum. As a result the whole sector is in a flux. 

Even so, the insurance sector is projected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate ("CAGR") of 12-15 per cent in the next five years, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation. LIC is the only public sector insurance company in India and going by the life insurance premiums collected in FY 2013, it was a leader with a whopping 72.7 per cent market share.

Opening up of the sector

The insurance sector opened up in 2001, with the foreign direct investment ("FDI") limit being set to 26 per cent. According to various reports this sector has subsequently witnessed two phases: one that saw high growth between 2001 and 2010 and the other, a dormant period between 2010 and 2012. However, apart from these periods of rapid and moderate growth, the industry has also seen product and operational innovations, given the increase in competition.

As of FY 13, the total market size of this sector was US$ 66.4 billion and is expected to touch US$ 350-400 billion by 2020. According to experts, while India’s insurance industry is no doubt growing and is poised to grow further, it is also facing profitability issues on account of distribution and operating models. It pegs the cumulative losses to private life insurers in the excess of Rs 187 billion till March 2012. Slow growth, rising costs and stalled reforms are further hindering the steady growth of this industry.

Make way for reforms

If the announcement made in the Union Budget 2014-15 is anything to go by, the future of this sector looks optimistic. Taking a reformative step, new finance minister Arun Jaitley had proposed increasing the FDI cap in the insurance sector to 49 per cent. To this effect, in July 2014, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs ("CCEA") approved 49% FDI in insurance, thus green-flagging reforms in the sector.  This is a welcome move for the insurance industry which was looking to raise more capital from overseas for quite some time now.

The proposal to hike FDI in insurance is pending since 2008. The Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill was introduced by the previous UPA government. However it could not be taken up in the Rajya Sabha as it faced severe opposition from several quarters. However, with the new government pushing for reforms, the investment-starved sector has definitely got a boost.

Insurance penetration in India is on a decline. In 2010, insurance penetration was 4.4 per cent, which further dipped to 3.17 per cent in 2012-13, according to Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority’s ("IRDA") annual report (2012-13). For insurance penetration to increase, the sector will need huge amounts of capital investment and the hike in FDI cap will only make this easier.

"For long, the insurance sector has been waiting for adequate funds for its expansion. Increasing the FDI cap in this sector will definitely give it the much needed fillip," says Rajeev Saxena, Insurance sector expert, Mazars. "As the sector expands, it will also lead to job creation in the sector."

As more capital flows into the insurance sector and the manpower increases, it will be easier for insurance companies to tap under-insured markets.

The road ahead

By 2020, India’s insurable population is expected to touch 75 crore. As a result, the importance of life insurance in financial planning is only set to increase.

With the new government’s stress on reforms, steps taken by IRDA to make insurance more consumer-friendly and India’s favourable demographic, the future of India’s insurance industry looks good.

However, it remains to be seen how this sector impacts the unbanked sections of India, in the years to come.

Apollo Munich to spend ₹10 cr on football-centric initiatives

Apollo Munich Health Insurance Co Ltd is now looking to extend its Indian Super League (ISL) football connect with a variety of marketing and branding initiatives.

The company, a co-sponsor for the Kolkata franchise Atletico de Kolkata, will be spending approximately ₹10 crore over the next three years to carry out such football-centric initiatives.

According to Antony Jacob, CEO, Apollo Munich will look to bring to light the various health issues, including lifestyle diseases, and indirectly promote health insurance.

Targeting Tier 2, 3, 4 and 5 cities, most of its immediate marketing activities will be centred around Kolkata and the suburbs.

“Football has started gaining popularity across the country. And we would like to take this opportunity to create health awareness amongst the kids and their parents,” he said.

India has one of the lowest health insurance covers per person.


Market sources indicate that just 75 million people in the country (out of 1.2 billion) have health insurance cover.

The premium per person, per annum in India is as low as ₹2,000.

The company currently has 10 offerings in the health insurance segment and is looking to have an annual premium of ₹850 crore by the end of this fiscal.

For FY-14, its annual premium collections stood at ₹685 crore.

How to know how much life insurance do you need

Best form of insurance is term insurance and best savings is long-term investment in equity through mutual funds

Adequate life Insurance cover, a good saving habit and an early started retirement planning are three basic elements of a healthy service life. Experts say, best form of insurance is term insurance, best savings is long-term investment in equity through mutual fund and best retirement planning is long term asset accumulation through diversified investment.

But, the most common incident seen among the middle class people is that in early part of their service life they are irregular with their saving habit. Being unable to differentiate among the asset classes, they often end-up a good part of their working life by aimless savings and futile investments. Nevertheless, it is better late than never. In this article, an attempt is made to discuss some aspects of life insurance and retirement planning:-

How much life insurance cover is sufficient?

Life Insurance is needed to give financial protection to the dependent family in case of unfortunate death of the breadwinner. Unlike general-insurance (where the value of the asset to be insured is ascertained at first); life insurance can’t assign a value to a human life; but it targets to compensate for the financial loss to the family in absence of the breadwinner.

So, to assess the adequacy of life insurance one has to know how much financial loss his family will suffer in his absence.

Here, the Human Life Value Approach (HLV) is known as the most comprehensive approach, which involves calculating the lifetime income of the individual (making adjustments for all expected hikes and cuts) and discounting it at appropriate rate to arrive at the present value of all future earning of the individual.

Since this approach is a bit technical, one can also use a simple and handy arithmetic calculation to check whether his life insurance cover is sufficient or not :-
70% of annual income + other liabilities and outstanding loans

Current Annuity Rate

The resultant figure of the above formula is presumed to be sufficient to support the family in case of unfortunate death of the breadwinner. Here, 70% of one’s annual income is taken because other 30% is supposed to be one’s self maintenance cost (however, the figure is presumptive and subject to change from individual to individual). Currently the annuity rate offered by premier life insurance companies is around 8 %. Since, this rate is subject to change and one need to re-check the sufficiency of life insurance periodically.

In addition to annuity rate, a change in one’s liability composition can also change his life insurance need. Pure term insurance is the best and cheapest choice for this purpose. But, the Problem with most of the people is that they think term insurance is wastage, because it has no maturity value. These people prefer endowment policies and use these policies as saving instruments also. Be aware that the fundamental purpose of all life insurance policies is to give a potential life cover to the life assured and other features are mere attachments.

Still, some additional advantages available with the endowment policy often allure people. The advantages may be: - these policies generate some forced saving, these policies are acceptable as collateral deposits, additional premiums give income tax advantages, and maturity benefits are tax-free and so forth. In any case, please note that as saving instruments life insurance policies mayn’t always beat inflation. Still, if you are not a good investor and happy with a fair return on your money, you may check some high cover endowment type plans for a longer term or opt for some premium back term plans also.

Please, take care of three important aspects while purchasing your life insurance:-

i) While purchasing any endowment type policy choose a term, which may give maturity just before your retirement. Endowment policies taken at younger age for longer term often give a better return.

ii) Surrendering any insurance policy in middle of the term is not at all advisable. You will lose your life cover and a part of your accrued bonus also. Therefore, always take a term (the maximum possible) which will best fit your purpose.

iii) Check the claim settlement record and if possible the profit and loss position of the company from which you purchase your policy.

Again, a term insurance policy along with a PPF account is a widely preferred combination for insurance plus savings purpose.
